The day after Messi secures his GOAT status winning the 2022 World Cup with Argentina, Panini hits the market with the debut of it’s vaunted World Cup Prizm set. Since the set’s physical debut from 2014, this iconic brand has commanded the attention of collectors the world over. Ahem:

Can Panini carry that success through to the set’s NFT debut?

Probably not in the near term and here’s why:

• Over supply: Mosaic Road to the World Cup dropped last month and still sits in the shop with roughly 65% of the drop (90,000+ packs) unsold. Now add 200,000 World Cup Prizm packs to the mix and you can understand why supply is a concern. Just last week Panini announced NFL Prizm packs would go on sale for half price. Great news if you’d been on the fence about getting involved, less so if you’ve already spent money on the platform.
• Techy Stuff: Built on Sawtooth Hyperledger – Panini continues to push off cries from the community over the continually promised blockchain explorer. This is only going to matter more and more over the coming weeks/months/years and is directly correlated, in our opinion, with long term value-creation.
• The Contest: Panini whales are fed up. My man @nftaficianado‘s most recent post has the details but suffice to say they’re putting their NFT’s where their…..keyboards are? idk. Anyway, quite a few of the large buyers on the Panini side are planning to sit this one out, both primary and secondary, so we’ll have to see what effect that has on the drop, if any.

The Final Question

Am I a buyer? No, I’m terrible at ripping packs, like historically bad, but I’m going to keep my eye on secondary and see if I can snag a couple first ever Prizm World Cup NFT’s for a couple bucks.
